What the display is for
Android Central's list: a camera viewfinder with zoom, live captions of whoever you are talking to (private to you — nobody can see the display from outside), pedestrian navigation that Meta expanded to every US city in May 2026, WhatsApp and Messenger and native messaging, Instagram Reels, Spotify shortcuts and widgets (Meta newsroom, March 2026). The Neural Band reads electrical signals in your wrist so you can pinch, rotate to adjust volume or zoom, and — with Neural Handwriting — reply to a message by writing with a finger on any surface. Nothing else on the market does this; that is the case for it.
What the display costs you
The camera is the surprise: the cheaper Gen 2 records 3K/30 or 1080p/60 while the Display tops out at 1440 × 1920 at 30 fps (Android Central calls the Gen 2 “a more capable camera”). The frame is thicker — Android Central says not excessively so — and comes in two colors with Transitions only. The prescription range is narrower, costs $200 extra, and the lenses cannot be swapped once fused to the display. And you cannot buy it online: Meta sells it in person after a demo and fitting, with supplies Android Central described as limited. For someone who wants to capture things, every one of those is a step backward.
The honest middle
Android Central's reviewer, a year in: “I like them, but it still feels like something is missing.” The Display is a first-generation product doing something new; the Gen 2 is a refined second-generation product doing something proven. If you are asking which one to buy, the Gen 2 is the answer for most people. If you already know the display is what you want, nothing else scratches the itch — read the Display explainer before the store visit.
