Oakley Meta: HSTN, Vanguard, and how they compare with Ray-Ban

Two Oakleys, two different products

The name hides a real split. The Oakley Meta HSTN is, in Android Central's words, an “easy choice” against the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 because it is the same product: identical 12 MP camera, 3K/30 video, five-mic array, 8-hour rating and case. What you are choosing is a rounder Oakley frame, straight temples, one size (133 mm), and Prizm lens options Ray-Ban cannot offer. The Oakley Meta Vanguard is a different animal: a wraparound sport frame with the camera moved to the center of the nose bridge and widened to 122 degrees, an IP67 sweat and water rating, speakers six decibels louder, roughly nine hours of battery, an action button, and a Garmin link — at 66 grams and with sun lenses only. What to buy first

If you want one pair for everything — office, driving, a run on the weekend — the HSTN with Transitions lenses is the Oakley to buy, and the HSTN review explains the trade-offs against the Ray-Ban. If the glasses are for training, the Vanguard review is the one; it is the only pair on this site a reviewer describes as never slipping over a hundred-plus miles, and the only one with a nose guard designed for sweat.

What decides price

Lenses and sport hardware. The HSTN launched $20 above the cheapest Ray-Ban Gen 2, and its Prizm polarized and Transitions options add to that. The Vanguard launched at $499 — $120 more than a base Gen 2 — and that money buys the wider centered camera, the IP67 rating, the louder speakers and the extra hour, not a better sensor. The mistake buyers make

Buying the Vanguard as an everyday pair. It has no clear lens and no prescription option, so it is a sunglasses-only sports tool; Android Central's reviewer is blunt that you are “not wearing these into a museum.” The reverse mistake is buying the HSTN for sport: its straight temples stayed on less well than the Ray-Bans in the same reviewer's burpee test.
