Prizm is the reason to buy an Oakley over a Ray-Ban with the same electronics, and it is also the most misunderstood word on the spec sheet. This guide explains what Prizm tints do, which ones each Oakley Meta frame offers, where Transitions fit, which frame takes a prescription, and what to know about replacement lenses.

What Prizm actually is
A sun lens does one thing: cut light. A Prizm lens is dyed to pass some wavelengths and block others so that the colors that matter in a particular setting — the white line on asphalt, the green of a fairway, the blue-green of open water — stand out. Android Central's HSTN reviewer: Prizm lenses “are a unique take on tinted lenses that work exceptionally well in the sun, blocking out a significant portion of light and adding a vibrant hue to your world” — and, because you can only get them on Oakley, “worth it for folks who spend a lot of time outside.” They are not magic; they are a tint chosen for a job.

Which Prizm for which use
Road — cycling and running on asphalt; contrast for road texture and markings. Dark Golf — fairways and greens; HSTN only. Deep Water — polarized for fishing and boating; HSTN only. 24K, Black, Sapphire, Ruby, Rose Gold — general bright-light tints in different colors; 24K and Black are the neutral choices. Oakley publishes light-transmission figures for its Prizm lenses on its own site; we have not verified them per Meta frame and do not quote them.
Transitions on an Oakley
The HSTN offers standard Transitions (gray, amethyst, clear-to-brown) that clear indoors — a real one-pair-for-everything option. The Vanguard's Prizm Transitions Ember, added in spring 2026, is different: it adapts across outdoor light “for optimal outdoor performance” (Meta newsroom) but starts from a Prizm tint, not clear, so it is a sport lens for changing light, not an indoor lens. Both share the photochromic caveat: little darkening behind a windshield. The Transitions guide covers it.
Prescription
HSTN: yes, through Meta or Oakley, with tints available on prescription lenses; the range is quoted alongside the Ray-Ban Gen 2 (sources vary — see the prescription guide). Vanguard: Android Central's Gen 2 review states it has “no Transitions or prescription options”; Meta has since added Prizm Transitions but we have seen no prescription option announced. If you need a prescription and want an Oakley, it is the HSTN.
