What Transitions lenses do
Molecules in the lens change shape under ultraviolet light and absorb visible light, so the lens darkens outdoors and clears when the UV goes away. The result is one pair that works at a desk and on a sidewalk. Speed and darkness depend on temperature (slower to darken in heat) and on the lens generation, which none of the makers specify in the sources we used — so we quote no darkening times. Transitions is a brand (EssilorLuxottica's), which is why Ray-Ban, Oakley and Meta all use the name.

The windshield caveat
Car glass blocks most UV, so standard photochromic lenses stay close to clear while you drive. If the commute is the reason you want sunglasses, a polarized sun lens does the job and Transitions do not. This is true of photochromic lenses generally; it is not a Meta limitation and no smart-glasses maker has published a windshield-activated variant in our sources.
Cost
On the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, Transitions added $80 to the $379 launch price and polarized added $30 (Android Central). Oakley and Meta-brand premiums are set in each configurator; the Display includes Transitions in its price.
