Sunglasses or Clear Lenses? The First Decision Most Buyers Get Wrong

Start with the hours, not the look

Count where you will wear them. If the honest answer is “at work, at home, out in the evening, and on weekends outside,” that is mostly indoor hours, and a pair of sunglasses will spend most of its life in the case. If the answer is “driving, running, the beach, the boat,” sun lenses are right and clear lenses would be useless. Most people who ask this question are the first kind and buy the second kind, because the marketing photos are all sunglasses.

The camera changes the social math

A pair of clear-lens Ray-Ban Metas looks like eyeglasses, and eyeglasses are normal everywhere. A pair of sunglasses worn indoors is not — and on smart glasses, sunglasses indoors is the exact look that got the category its nickname (Wikipedia). If you want to wear the camera pair to dinner without a conversation about it, buy clear or Transitions. If you want the sunglasses look, accept that the glasses come off at the door like any sunglasses.

Which frames suit which lens

Prescription changes the answer

If you need a prescription and want the glasses to be your everyday pair, that is a clear-lens (or Transitions) decision by definition, and the frame question becomes the prescription guide. If you wear contacts, the lens is a pure preference and sunglasses are the more common buy.
