Best Smart Glasses Under $500: Where Each Extra $100 Goes

Under $500 is not a budget bracket in this category — it is almost the entire consumer market. Every camera-and-AI pair Meta sells except the display model lands inside it, from $269.99 to $499, and the hardware inside barely changes across that range. Here is the ladder, what each step actually buys, and the two rungs worth skipping.

Prices come from Amazon's own data, carry the date they were checked, and disappear rather than go stale. A product that is not sold anywhere we earn from carries no buy link at all — we still cover it and cite its maker for the specs.

Scores are our editorial judgment from manufacturer specs and named reviews, weighted on the published rubric.

A note on the price in the title

“Under $500” here means the manufacturer's launch price as published by the sources we cite — not today's price, which changes, and which every button on this page opens live. Launch prices: Echo Frames $269.99 (December 2023), Meta Adventurer and Fury $299 (June 2026), Ray-Ban Meta Audio $349 (September 2026), Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 $379 (September 2025), Oakley Meta HSTN $399, Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 $449 (September 2026), Oakley Meta Vanguard $499. A pair that launched above $500 may be discounted below it on the day you read this, and the reverse is just as true.

The price ladder, and what each step buys

Launch prices and specs from Android Central, 9to5Google, TechCrunch, Tom's Guide, UploadVR and Meta's newsroom. Every product card below links to its source.
PricePairWhat the step up actually adds
$269.99Amazon Echo FramesBaseline: Alexa, open-ear audio, five ordinary frame shapes, prescription through your own optician. No camera, no AI vision.
$299Meta Adventurer / FuryA 12 MP 3K camera, Meta AI that can see and translate, 8 h + a 40 h case, an action button, adjustable temple tips. The biggest single jump on the ladder.
$349Ray-Ban Meta AudioDeletes the camera again, but adds 12 h of battery, 43 g and a six-mic array — the camera-free pair for people who want the Ray-Ban and not the lens.
$379Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2The Ray-Ban name and Ray-Ban's full lens range, a wider prescription range than the Adventurer, three frame shapes, two Wayfarer sizes, a 48 h case.
$399Oakley Meta HSTNPrizm lenses you cannot get on a Ray-Ban (including Dark Golf and Deep Water polarized), an Oakley frame, 49 g. Identical electronics to the Gen 2.
$449Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3An hour more battery, a 50 h case, a six-mic array, a customizable action button — on the same camera. Not listed on Amazon when we checked.
$499Oakley Meta VanguardThe only genuine hardware upgrade on the ladder: centered 122° camera, IP67, speakers six decibels louder, ~9 h, Garmin and Strava integration.

Why the Gen 2 is #1 and not the cheaper Adventurer

Because $80 buys the two things people most often discover they needed after they bought: a wider prescription range (-6.00 to +4.00 against the Adventurer's -6.00 to +2.25, per Android Central) and Ray-Ban's full lens range including polarized and Transitions. Add three frame shapes, a Large Wayfarer for wider heads and a 48-hour case. If your prescription is inside +2.25 and you do not care about the name, the Adventurer is the better buy and we say so in its card — that is the whole argument of Meta Glasses vs Ray-Ban Meta.

Which page you actually want

If your ceiling is really $300, go to best smart glasses under $300 — it compares the $299 tier against the $379 Ray-Ban in detail and covers the Gen 1. If you want the single best pair regardless of price, the main ranking is the page. This page exists for the shopper whose budget is the round number, and whose real question is which rung of the ladder to stop on.

What is above $500, so you know what you are not getting

One thing, essentially: a display. The Meta Ray-Ban Display launched at $799 with a screen in the right lens and a Neural Band wristband, and the camera-free Even Realities G2 is $599 with a heads-up display in both lenses. Under $500 there is no screen in any pair, on any platform, that we would recommend — the display roundup explains why that price gap exists.

Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2)

Ray-Ban Meta

The default smart glasses: a 12 MP camera with 3K/30 or 1080p/60 video, up to 8 hours per charge with 48 more in the case, 27 frame-and-lens combinations, and a Large size for wider heads.

Best for
Most people buying their first (or second) pair of AI glasses

#1 under $500 — the default pair. $379 at launch for a 12 MP camera with 3K/30 and 1080p/60, up to 8 hours plus about 48 in the case, 27 frame-and-lens combinations, Standard and Large sizes, and the widest prescription range of the Meta-family frames. About 52 g and a thick frame are the standing complaints, and the sensor is unchanged from Gen 1.

Pros

  • 3K video at 30 fps plus a 1080p/60 mode, with the stabilization introduced on Oakley Meta HSTN (Android Central)
  • Meta rates up to 8 hours per charge — nearly double Gen 1 — and the case adds about 48 hours; 50% in 20 minutes
  • Standard and Large frame sizes; clear, polarized and Transitions lenses; prescription available through Meta or Ray-Ban
  • Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, 32 GB (about 500 photos or 100 30-second clips)

Cons

  • About 52 g — reviewers call the frames thick and heavy for all-day wear
  • Prescription range is narrower than a regular Ray-Ban and is quoted differently by sources (see the prescription guide)
  • Camera sensor is unchanged from Gen 1; low-light video is still weak in named reviews

Meta Adventurer

Meta

Meta's own-brand rectangular frame: the same 12 MP / 3K camera and 8-hour battery as Gen 2 but with a 40-hour case, an extra action button, adjustable temple tips and a Large size — for $80 less at launch. The prescription range is narrower.

Best for
Anyone who wants Gen 2 performance without paying for the Ray-Ban name

The value pick, and the right answer for a lot of people. $299 for the same camera, the same Meta AI and the same 8-hour rating, with a bigger 40-hour case, an action button, adjustable temple tips and a Large size. Second only because the prescription range stops at +2.25 and the lens choice is narrower.

Pros

  • 8 hours rated plus 40 hours in the folding case; Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 (9to5Google, Android Central)
  • Customizable action button, adjustable temple tips and over-extension hinges the Ray-Ban Gen 2 lacks
  • Thinnest Meta frame yet, in Linen, Merlot, Classic Black and Classic Tortoise; sun, polarized, Transitions or clear lenses
  • Listed on Amazon

Cons

  • Prescription range is only -6.00 to +2.25 (Android Central) — Ray-Ban Gen 2 and Oakley HSTN go wider
  • No interchangeable nose pads; Android Central found the weight noticeable after about half an hour

Oakley Meta HSTN

Oakley Meta

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 internals in an Oakley frame: identical 3K camera, 8-hour battery and five-mic array, with Prizm lens options you can't get on a Ray-Ban and a one-size fit that sits between the Wayfarer Standard and Large.

Best for
People who want Gen 2 performance with Oakley styling and Prizm sun lenses

The lens upgrade, not a hardware upgrade. $399 for identical Gen 2 electronics in an Oakley frame with Prizm options — Dark Golf for the course, Deep Water polarized for the water, Transitions for everyday — at 49 g and one size, 133 mm. Android Central's line on Gen 2 versus HSTN is that the choice is “all down to style”.

Pros

  • Same hardware, specs and features as Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) — Android Central calls the choice 'all down to style'
  • Lens run: clear, Transitions gray or amethyst, Prizm Ruby, Prizm Deep Water polarized, Prizm Black polarized; Prizm Dark Golf added March 2026
  • 49 g, 133 mm hinge to hinge, 49 mm lenses, 145 mm temples (Tom's Guide) — one size that fits between the two Wayfarers
  • Prescription lenses and tints available

Cons

  • Straight temples — Android Central found they stay on less well than the Ray-Bans during burpees and head-tilting sports
  • One frame style and four colors versus Ray-Ban's three styles
  • Launched $20 above the cheapest Ray-Ban Gen 2

Pick 04 · Camera AI glasses · REF BES-04

Oakley Meta Vanguard

Oakley Meta

The sport pair: a centered 122-degree camera, IP67 sweat and water rating, speakers six decibels louder, about nine hours of battery, an action button and a Garmin link — in a 66 g wraparound frame with no clear or prescription lenses.

Best for
Runners, cyclists, skiers and anyone recording in sweat, rain or wind

The only pair under $500 with better camera hardware. $499 buys a centered 122-degree lens, IP67, speakers six decibels louder, about nine hours, a nose guard that does not slide, and Garmin and Strava integration. It is also 66 g, sun-only, and has no prescription option — a sports tool, not an everyday frame.

Pros

  • 122° field of view versus 100° on Ray-Ban Gen 2 and HSTN, with the camera centered over the nose (UploadVR)
  • 3K/30 and 1080p/60 for up to 3 minutes per clip, 1080p/30 for up to 5, 720p/120 slow motion; hyperlapse; three stabilization levels
  • IP67 — handles sweat and rain (not swimming); about 9 hours typical use; speakers six decibels louder than other Meta glasses
  • Built-in nose guard keeps the frame from sliding on sweaty runs; Garmin watch stats read aloud via Meta AI (Android Central review)

Cons

  • 66-67 g — reviewers say you feel the weight if you wear them too long
  • Prizm sun lenses only; no clear lens, and no prescription option at launch — not an indoor or nighttime pair
  • Portrait-only photos and weak low-light video, like every Meta pair

Pick 05 · Audio glasses (camera-free) · REF BES-05

Ray-Ban Meta Audio

Ray-Ban Meta

Ray-Ban Meta with the camera deleted: 12 hours per charge and 48 more in the case, a six-mic array Meta says cuts more than 90% of background noise, 43 grams, Clubmaster or Burbank frames with prescriptions — $349, shipping October 13, 2026.

Best for
Wanting Meta AI, calls and music in a Ray-Ban with nothing for anyone to object to

The camera-free Ray-Ban, if the camera is the problem. $349 for 12 hours of battery, 43 grams, a six-mic array and Clubmaster or Burbank frames with prescriptions. Fifth here because it ships October 13, 2026, nobody has measured it yet, and it was not on Amazon when we checked — so it carries no buy button here.

Pros

  • Up to 12 hours per charge — 50% more than the Gen 2's 8 — plus about 48 hours in the case (Meta newsroom)
  • 43 g against about 52 g for a Gen 2 Wayfarer, because the camera and its battery budget are gone
  • Six-mic array Meta says cuts more than 90% of background noise on calls and voice commands
  • Clubmaster and Burbank shapes across 23 color and lens combinations, prescription-compatible, with adjustable temple tips and swappable nose pads

Cons

  • Not shipping until October 13, 2026 — pre-order only when we checked on September 26, and no reviewer has measured any of these numbers yet
  • No listing on Amazon, so our link is a plain reference link to Meta and earns nothing
  • No camera and no display — no photos, no video, and none of the 'Hey Meta, what am I looking at' AI
  • Meta's separate FDA-cleared Hearing Enhancement feature was announced for Meta AI Glasses and, per Engadget, not the Ray-Ban models at first

Not on AmazonSold by Meta Store direct, so there is no price or buy link here — we would earn nothing and tracked links are the only ones we publish.

Amazon Echo Frames (3rd Gen)

Amazon

Alexa on your face and nothing on anyone else's: open-ear speakers, no camera, no display, six hours of music (up to 14 of light use), sold on Amazon in five frame shapes that take prescription, blue-light or sunglass lenses.

Best for
Anyone who wants calls, music and an assistant in ordinary-looking glasses — and no camera

The floor of the ladder. $269.99 at launch for Alexa, open-ear audio, six hours of music and five ordinary frame shapes your own optician can fit — no camera, no AI vision, no display. Last on this page because it is the least glasses for the money in feature terms, and the right pick for anyone who wants none of those features.

Pros

  • No camera and no recording light to explain — welcome where camera glasses are banned
  • Rectangle, square, round, cat-eye and Carrera styles; prescription-ready (Tom's Guide)
  • Six hours of music at 80% volume (up from four on Gen 2); 'Find my glasses' via Alexa; VIP notification filter
  • Sold directly by Amazon; the current listing is labeled 'Designed for Alexa+'

Cons

  • Charges on a fiddly bridge-style stand, not in the case (Tom's Guide)
  • Audible sound spill at half volume in a quiet room
  • No camera, no AI vision, no display — Alexa only; weight is not published in the sources we used
  • Amazon's own listing had no buyable offer on October 4, 2026 — it read 'Currently unavailable', so treat it as stock-dependent and check before you plan around it

Specs from Tom's Guide — Amazon Echo Frames (3rd Gen) review (battery, charging, styles).

Buying guide

Spend the $500 here instead, in three cases

  • Your prescription is strong or unusual. A $299 frame with a +2.25 ceiling is a wasted $299. Start from the prescription roundup, not the price.
  • You have a wide head. The Large sizes and the 137 mm frames are a specific, short list — see smart glasses for big heads. A pair that pinches gets left in a drawer.
  • You want it for sport. Then $499 on the Vanguard is better value than $379 on a frame that slides, and the sport guide explains why.

What to budget on top

Lens upgrades are the line people forget: polarized was +$30 and Transitions +$80 on the Ray-Ban Gen 2 at launch (Android Central), and Engadget lists Vanguard lens swaps at $85 each. Prescription lenses are extra again, and go through Meta or Ray-Ban rather than your optician on the Meta-family frames. A second charging case or a hard case for travel is $20-$60 — our accessories guide covers what is worth buying. Realistically, a $379 pair with the lenses you actually want is a $450-$500 purchase.

What we would not spend it on

The Gen 3 at $449, unless calls in noisy places are your main use. It is the same camera and the same video as the $379 Gen 2, it was not on Amazon when we checked, and the improvements — an hour of battery, the mic array, the action button, adjustable temple tips — are worth $70 to a specific buyer and nothing to everyone else. The Gen 2 vs Gen 3 page makes that case in detail.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the best smart glasses under $500?

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 at $379 for most people — the widest lens and prescription range with the standard 12 MP 3K camera. The $299 Meta Adventurer is the value pick with the same camera, and the $499 Oakley Meta Vanguard is the only pair in this range with better camera hardware.

Do you get a better camera if you spend more?

Only at $499. From $299 to $449 every Meta-family pair uses the same 12 MP sensor with 3K/30 and 1080p/60 video. The Vanguard's camera is genuinely different: centered over the nose with a 122-degree field of view against 100 degrees elsewhere.

Are there smart glasses with a display under $500?

Not that we would recommend. The Meta Ray-Ban Display launched at $799 and the camera-free Even Realities G2 at $599. Under $500 you are buying camera-and-audio glasses, not a screen.

Is the Oakley HSTN worth $20 more than a Ray-Ban Meta?

Only for the lenses and the look — the electronics are identical (Android Central). Prizm Dark Golf and Prizm Deep Water polarized are genuinely useful if you golf or fish; if you do neither, the extra $20 buys styling.

What is the cheapest pair worth buying?

The $299 Meta Adventurer if you want a camera and AI; the $269.99 Echo Frames if you do not. Below that, see our camera glasses under $100 page — the honest version of the budget end.
