What actually changed
Two things. Video: the Gen 2 records at 3K (1440 × 1920) at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps, with the stabilization Android Central first saw on the HSTN and called the biggest camera upgrade over Gen 1; in daylight 3K footage has more detail and less compression, and 60 fps is smoother for motion. Stills are the same 12 MP on both. Battery: Meta says nearly double. Android Central's HSTN battery testing (same hardware as Gen 2) led them to expect about 60% better real-world life than Gen 1, with photo and video capture showing the biggest gain and music or calls roughly an hour more. The Gen 2 case also holds more.
What did not
The look (Android Central: “virtually identical”), the shapes, the five-mic array, the speakers, the app, and the AI. Meta updates both; the Vanguard review notes Meta was “currently porting Vanguard features to its first-gen Ray-Bans.” A Gen 1 owner who upgrades gets a better camera and a longer day, not a different product — which is exactly why the same reviewer wrote the Gen 2 review for “the millions of Gen 1 buyers wondering whether these new glasses are enough to justify an upgrade.” His answer: yes if you are frustrated by the battery; otherwise the gap is subtle.
The third option
Meta's own Adventurer and Fury launched in June 2026 at the Gen 1's $299 with the Gen 2's camera and battery and a 40-hour case.
