Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 vs Gen 2: What $80 Buys, and When It Doesn't
Same sensor, same shapes, same app. The Gen 2 launched $80 higher for two things — video and battery — and one of them matters to almost everyone. Here is the spec-by-spec gap, the measured battery difference, and what to buy now the original has sold out of new stock.

What actually changed
Two things. Video: the Gen 2 records at 3K (1440 × 1920) at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps, with the stabilization Android Central first saw on the HSTN and called the biggest camera upgrade over Gen 1; in daylight 3K footage has more detail and less compression, and 60 fps is smoother for motion. Stills are the same 12 MP on both. Battery: Meta says nearly double. Android Central's HSTN battery testing (same hardware as Gen 2) led them to expect about 60% better real-world life than Gen 1, with photo and video capture showing the biggest gain and music or calls roughly an hour more. The Gen 2 case also holds more.
What did not
The look (Android Central: “virtually identical”), the shapes, the five-mic array, the speakers, the app, and the AI. Meta updates both; the Vanguard review notes Meta was “currently porting Vanguard features to its first-gen Ray-Bans.” A Gen 1 owner who upgrades gets a better camera and a longer day, not a different product — which is exactly why the same reviewer wrote the Gen 2 review for “the millions of Gen 1 buyers wondering whether these new glasses are enough to justify an upgrade.” His answer: yes if you are frustrated by the battery; otherwise the gap is subtle.
What to buy now instead
As of November 4, 2026 the first-generation Wayfarer has no new-condition offer on Amazon — the searches return renewed listings, which this site does not link. So the price argument for the original is over, and it has a clean replacement: Meta's own Adventurer and Fury launched in June 2026 at the Gen 1's $299 with the Gen 2's camera and battery and a 40-hour case. Is the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 worth the upgrade from Gen 1?
If short battery life frustrates you or you record video, yes: nearly double the battery and 3K/30 or 1080p/60 recording with better stabilization (Android Central). If you mostly take photos and use the assistant, the gap is subtle.
Does the Gen 2 have a better camera than Gen 1?
Same 12 MP sensor, but 3K video instead of 1080p, a 60 fps mode, and advanced stabilization. Photos are the same.
Is the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 still sold?
Not new. On October 4, 2026 the Gen 1 Wayfarer Large was the last version with a live new-condition offer on Amazon; when we re-checked on November 4, 2026 that offer was gone too, leaving only renewed listings, which we do not link. Meta does still ship new features to first-generation frames you already own.
