Why video drains it
The camera, the image processor, the Wi-Fi radio that moves the clip to your phone and the stabilization all run at once. Android Central's HSTN battery testing — same hardware as Gen 2 — found that photo and video capture showed the biggest improvement over Gen 1, which is another way of saying capture is where the battery goes. On the Vanguard, the same reviewer noted that heavy 3K recording with GPS overlays and music brings a nine-hour rating down to three or four. Plan a day of recording around the case.
Gen 1 vs Gen 2
Meta says Gen 2 nearly doubles Gen 1. Android Central, extrapolating from its HSTN battery review, expected about 60% better real-world life, with capture gaining most and music or calls gaining roughly an hour. Making a day of it
- Case top-ups. Twenty minutes in the case at lunch is 50%. The case is the battery; the glasses are the buffer.
- Record in 1080p/30 when 3K does not matter. Lower resolution, longer clip limit (5 min vs 3 on the Vanguard), less drain.
- Turn off what you are not using. Continuous Live AI sessions and livestreaming are the two heaviest features.
- Carry a USB-C power bank on trips. It recharges the case; the glasses never plug in directly.
- A second case if you routinely leave the original at home.
“Battery draining fast”
