Google Smart Glasses: Much Closer Than Apple's, and Still Without a Price

Unlike Apple's, Google's glasses have been shown in public, named their frame partners and cleared the FCC. Samsung builds the hardware, Google supplies Android XR and Gemini, and Warby Parker and Gentle Monster design the frames - two model numbers, SM-O200P and SM-O200J, surfaced in FCC filings at the start of October 2026. The reported hardware is a single 12 MP camera with an indicator LED, a Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 and up to nine hours per charge. What nobody has published is the price or the on-sale date.

Google has tried this before, which is why people are careful

Google Glass is the reason “Google smart glasses” is still a search term more than a decade after the original was mocked off the street. It had a tiny prism display over one eye, a camera nobody trusted, and it was discontinued. The enterprise edition followed and was discontinued too. Nothing you can buy from Google today is a pair of glasses.

What is different this time is that Google is not building the glasses. It is building the operating system - Android XR - and letting Samsung manufacture and eyewear brands design. That is the Android playbook applied to your face, and it is a much better bet than the 2013 one, because the part Google was worst at is now somebody else's job.

What has actually been confirmed

Three things, on the record, which is already more than exists for Apple's glasses:

  1. The platform. Android XR is Google's operating system for headsets and glasses, developed with Samsung and Qualcomm, with Gemini as the assistant.
  2. The frame partners. Warby Parker and Gentle Monster were both named publicly, alongside a broader push that has drawn other eyewear and fashion houses toward the platform. Warby Parker's first model is described as a screen-free audio-and-camera pair in frames that look like ordinary Warby Parker glasses.
  3. The window. Fall 2026, in select markets. That is the official language, and we are inside it as of late October 2026.

The hardware, as reported

The FCC filing is the most useful signal available, because it is a regulatory step that comes near the end of a product cycle rather than near the start. Road to VR reported on October 1, 2026 that two model numbers appeared - SM-O200P and SM-O200J - mapping to Warby Parker and Gentle Monster respectively, with multiple frame styles expected under each code (three Warby Parker variations, two from Gentle Monster so far), and called the filing “typically one of the last steps before commercialization.”

Two details in there are worth more than the rest. The first is that the camera reportedly ships with an indicator LED - the same bystander-facing compromise Meta uses, and a sign that Google is not trying to win the privacy argument by removing the camera. If you care how visible that indicator is in practice, the Meta-side evidence is on how to tell if Meta glasses are recording.

The second is nine hours. If that figure survives to retail, it beats the eight-hour rating on Meta's Gen 2 and own-brand frames and matches the Gen 3's nine. Nobody should read a pre-launch battery number as a measurement, but it does suggest Samsung is not shipping something obviously behind.

Where the display pairs are

Android XR is a two-track platform, and the glasses above are the first track. The second is the headset and display-glasses track - Samsung's Android XR headset, and Xreal's Project Aura, a tethered display device aimed at a different buyer entirely. None of the first Warby Parker or Gentle Monster frames reportedly has a display.

That matters if you came here wanting turn-by-turn directions floating in your lens. The pairs that do that today are not Google's, and we rank them on best smart glasses with a display. Google has demonstrated in-lens translation and navigation on prototype hardware; it is not what the first retail frames are reported to be.

Should an Android user wait?

Honestly, this one is a closer call than the Apple page, because “fall 2026” means weeks, not years.

Wait if you are already deep in Google's services, you want Gemini rather than Meta AI, and you are not in a hurry. The platform integration argument is real: a pair of glasses whose assistant is the same one on your phone, with your calendar and your mail already attached, is a better daily product than one that routes through a separate app and a separate account. There is also no sense buying a $449 pair in the same month a credible alternative is reported to go on sale at an unknown price.

Do not wait if you need it now, or if the camera is the point. A first-generation pair from a new platform will have first-generation problems, there is no independent review of these glasses yet because nobody outside the companies has used a retail unit, and a camera pair from Meta has three generations of public criticism behind it - which is uncomfortable for Meta and useful for you. Our best smart glasses for Android page ranks what works well on a Pixel or a Galaxy today.

Gemini without Google hardware, today

One under-reported fact: you do not need Google's glasses to put Gemini on your face. The Solos AirGo A5 is a camera-free audio frame whose “Hey Solos” assistant reaches ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek through the Solos app, with live one-to-one translation and prescription lenses available. It has no camera, Solos publishes no battery or weight figure for it, and there is no named lab review - so it is a narrower product than a Meta pair, not a better one. But if the sentence “I want Gemini in my glasses” is what brought you here, that pair already exists and is on Amazon.

The three pairs we would buy on Android right now

  1. Meta Adventurer - $299 at launch, the cheapest way into the current generation: the same 12 MP / 3K camera and eight-hour rating as the Ray-Ban Gen 2, a 40-hour folding case, an extra action button and a Large size. The prescription range is the narrow one (-6.00 to +2.25) and there are no swappable nose pads.
  2. Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 3) - the newest camera pair, with nine hours, a 50-hour case and the six-mic array. Worth the premium only if calls in noisy places are your use case; Gizmodo found the noise-reduction claim did not hold up, and the camera is unchanged from Gen 2.
  3. Solos AirGo A5 - no camera, Gemini (and three other models) through the Solos app, live translation, custom prescription lenses. Buy this instead of a Meta pair only if you specifically do not want a camera on your face.

If none of those is quite it, the full ranked field is on best smart glasses, and the camera-free shelf on best audio glasses.

One footnote on the waiting game: Google is not the furthest along of the big names taking money for glasses. Snap opened orders for its $2,195 Specs in June 2026 and still publishes no shipping month — a useful reminder that an open preorder is not a ship date. Snap smart glasses sets out what has and has not been released.

Anyone who wants Gen 2 performance without paying for the Ray-Ban name

Pros

  • 8 hours rated plus 40 hours in the folding case; Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 (9to5Google, Android Central)
  • Customizable action button, adjustable temple tips and over-extension hinges the Ray-Ban Gen 2 lacks
  • Thinnest Meta frame yet, in Linen, Merlot, Classic Black and Classic Tortoise; sun, polarized, Transitions or clear lenses
  • Listed on Amazon

Cons

  • Prescription range is only -6.00 to +2.25 (Android Central) — Ray-Ban Gen 2 and Oakley HSTN go wider

Pick 02 · Camera AI glasses

Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 3)

Ray-Ban Meta

The September 2026 refresh: an hour more battery (nine), a 50-hour case, a six-mic array Meta says cuts more than 90% of background noise, a customizable action button and adjustable temple tips — on the same 12 MP / 3K camera as Gen 2, for $70 more.

Best for
Buyers who take a lot of calls in noisy places, or who want the new Aviator or Zena shapes

Pros

  • Meta rates it at up to 9 hours of moderate use with up to 50 hours in the case — an hour and two hours more than Gen 2 (Meta help center)
  • New 6-mic array that Meta says 'cuts more than 90% of background noise' on calls and voice commands
  • Customizable action button and professional-adjustable temple tips — fit and control features Gen 2 does not have
  • Three shapes at launch (Aviator, Zena, Wayfarer) across 27 color and lens combinations; the Wayfarer comes in Standard and Large with a High-bridge option

Cons

  • $449 to start against $379 for the Gen 2 Meta still sells, for the same 12 MP sensor and the same 3K video — and the in-stock Amazon listing we link is the Transitions version, which prices higher again
  • The headline six-mic claim did not hold up for Gizmodo: callers still heard cars, trains and nearby conversation, and the reviewer called the result 'disappointing' against earlier generations' 'rock solid' noise cancellation
  • Gizmodo scored it 3.5/5 as 'a light iteration on the previous generation' and would not urge a Gen 2 owner to upgrade
  • Meta has not published a weight, a storage figure or an IP rating for Gen 3 specifically; the help center's IPX4 rating is written for Ray-Ban Meta generally
  • Dolby Atmos and 360-degree spatial-sound recording are promised 'later this year', not at launch; Engadget's hands-on found the Aviator 'quite a bit thicker' than other Ray-Ban Metas
  • The camera is 36% smaller than Gen 2's and, as Gizmodo notes, harder for bystanders to spot — with no shutter and no hardware privacy control

Pick 03 · Audio glasses (camera-free)

Solos AirGo A5

Solos

The camera-free AI frame that is not locked to one assistant: 'Hey Solos' reaches ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek through the Solos app, with live one-to-one translation, stereo open-ear speakers and swappable frame fronts — from $249.

Best for
Anyone who wants hands-free AI and translation without a camera on their face or Meta's ecosystem

Pros

  • Swap the AI engine instead of being locked to one — SolosChat reaches ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek (Android Central)
  • SolosTranslate handles live one-to-one translation, and Solos' own listings put translation in the product name
  • SmartHinge lets you swap frame fronts (and, on the A5, upgrade older AirGo 3 fronts with an A5 temple kit); prescription lenses available
  • No camera and no recording light — welcome where camera glasses are not, and the A5 is listed on Amazon

Cons

  • Solos does not publish battery life or weight on the A5 product page, and we found no named lab review of either
  • No camera, so none of the 'what am I looking at' AI that Meta glasses do — text translation of a menu needs the camera-equipped AirGo V2 ($299)
  • Smaller company, smaller support footprint: a one-year warranty and a 14-day return window (Solos)
  • Price depends heavily on the frame front and lens you pick; the cheapest configurations are the plainest

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Google make smart glasses?

Not directly, and not yet at retail. Google makes Android XR, the operating system; Samsung makes the hardware; and Warby Parker and Gentle Monster design the frames. The first models have a stated fall 2026 launch window, and Samsung model numbers for both brands appeared in FCC filings reported on October 1, 2026.

When do the Google / Android XR glasses go on sale?

The only official window is fall 2026, in select markets. A November launch month has been reported but not confirmed by Google or Samsung, and no specific date or price has been published.

How much will Google's smart glasses cost?

No price has been announced. For scale, the camera-and-audio pairs on sale now run from about $299 for Meta's own-brand frames to $449 for the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 and $499 for the Oakley Meta Vanguard. Anything more specific than that is a guess.

Will the Google glasses have a display?

Not the first Warby Parker and Gentle Monster frames, on the reporting we have seen - they are described as camera-and-audio pairs with off-ear speakers, no screen. Android XR's display devices are a separate track, including Samsung's headset and Xreal's Project Aura.

Do the Google glasses have a recording indicator?

The reported spec is a single 12 MP front-facing camera with an indicator LED - the same approach Meta takes. It is not an official spec sheet, and how obvious the light is in daylight is exactly the thing that only shows up in independent reviews.

Can I get Gemini on smart glasses today?

Yes, without waiting for Google's hardware. The Solos AirGo A5 reaches Gemini - along with ChatGPT, Claude and DeepSeek - through the Solos app, in a camera-free frame that takes a prescription. It is a narrower product than a Meta pair, and Solos publishes very little about its battery or weight.
