Meta Fury Review: Gen 2 Hardware, a Bigger Frame, and $80 Off the Ray-Ban Price

The Fury is Meta's boxy own-brand frame, and on paper it is the best value in the lineup: the same 12 MP sensor and 3K/30 video as a Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, eight hours rated with a 40-hour folding case, a customizable action button, bendable temple tips and over-extension hinges — for $299 at launch against $379. Gizmodo scored it 3.5 stars and summed the category up bluntly: the best smart glasses hardware, from a company it does not trust. This review covers both halves of that.

What you are buying

One of the three frames in Meta's own-brand line, launched on June 23, 2026 alongside the thinner Adventurer and the $399 Starfire collaboration. Inside all of them is the hardware from the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: a 12 MP camera shooting 3K/30 or 1080p/60, open-ear speakers, the microphone array, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Outside, the Fury is the deliberately chunky one — bigger and boxier than the Ray-Bans, with thick arms, in colorways including a semi-transparent racing green and a transparent sandstone.

Meta's pitch for the line was that dropping the Ray-Ban name drops the price, and that is exactly what happened: $299 at launch against $379 for the Gen 2 with the same sensor. Gizmodo's framing of the result — cheaper, but somehow better — is fair, because the extras are real.

The frame is the product

Everything electronic here exists on three other pairs of glasses. What is unique to the Fury is its shape, so that is the question to settle first: do you want a frame that announces itself? Gizmodo's description is the honest version — bigger and boxier than Ray-Bans, with thick arms, and if you do not like a bulkier look you should steer clear. The reviewer also found it just as comfortable as previous pairs despite the bulk, which matters more than the photographs suggest.

There is a practical argument for the chunk, too. Thick arms are where the battery and the speakers live, and a boxier front is a wider front — which, in a category where almost nothing fits a large head properly, is not nothing. The caveat is that the Fury comes in one size only, so it is wide-ish rather than genuinely large; if you need published millimeters, the frames that fit are listed on best smart glasses for big heads and the fit guide.

Camera, audio and the assistant

The camera is the same one in every current Meta pair, which means the same strengths (genuinely useful hands-free stills, usable 3K/30 and 1080p/60 clips, stabilization) and the same weaknesses (weak low light, short clips, no viewfinder). If you want the detail rather than the summary, camera quality explained and recording time limits cover it for the whole family.

The assistant is where the Meta-brand launch actually moved: the line ships with Meta's Muse Spark model, an upgrade on what Gen 2 launched with, and Gizmodo found the computer-vision side more fluid, conversational and useful — correctly identifying plants and pulling up restaurant reviews. Navigation was the inconsistent part, often pushing the task back to the phone. The reviewer also noticed the assistant appearing to hold the camera open for longer stretches, which is a fair thing to flag on a device whose camera is the social problem.

The action button, and why it matters here

On the top-right arm, in front of the capture button: it launches Meta AI by default and can be reprogrammed. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 has no equivalent, and it is a better feature than it sounds — waking the assistant without saying “Hey Meta” out loud in a quiet room is the difference between using the AI in public and not. It is also the feature Meta carried forward into Gen 3, which tells you it worked.

The trust problem, stated plainly

Gizmodo's headline is that the worst company still makes the best smart glasses, and the review's substance is worth repeating rather than softening. Videos and images captured by Meta glasses can be sent to human reviewers for AI training. The cameras on the newer frames are smaller and harder to notice. Dormant facial-recognition code has been spotted in the companion app. And despite Private Processing on the data side, Meta did nothing on the hardware side — there is no shutter and no physical camera cover on any of these frames; the capture LED is the entire bystander-protection system.

None of that is specific to the Fury, and that is the point: it is the price of entry to this platform at any price point. We cover both sides of it on smart glasses privacy concerns, the LED rules on how to tell if Meta glasses are recording, and the settings worth changing on Meta glasses privacy settings. If the trade is not one you want to make, the honest alternative is a camera-free pair — the Ray-Ban Meta Audio keeps Meta AI without a lens, and best smart glasses without a camera covers the rest.

Fury or Adventurer?

Same price, same electronics, same case, same prescription range. Three differences decide it: shape (boxy and thick against the thinnest frame Meta makes), size choice (one size against Standard and Large) and colorways (the Fury's transparent racing green and sandstone are the most distinctive finishes in the line). If you have a wide face and want a size labeled Large, buy the Adventurer. If you want glasses that look like a design decision rather than a concealment, buy the Fury. The longer version is in the Adventurer review and Meta Glasses vs Ray-Ban Meta.

Who should skip it

Anyone whose prescription runs past +2.25 or below -6.00 on Android Central's published range — that rules the Meta-brand line out entirely, and the prescription-first answer is Blayzer or Scriber Optics. Anyone who wants the widest lens catalog, which is still the Ray-Ban side. Anyone who wants the longest battery, which is now the camera-free Audio pair at 12 rated hours. And anyone shopping for understated glasses: the Fury is the opposite of understated, and that is exactly what it is for.

How we scored it

The Fury scores like the Adventurer with a style penalty and a fit bonus: identical camera and battery metrics, strong value at $299, and a frame that will not suit everyone. Scores on this site are editorial judgments built from manufacturer specs and the measurements named reviewers published, never from hands-on testing we have not done — how we score explains the rubric and the sourcing rules.

Pick 02 · Camera AI glasses

Meta Adventurer

Meta

Meta's own-brand rectangular frame: the same 12 MP / 3K camera and 8-hour battery as Gen 2 but with a 40-hour case, an extra action button, adjustable temple tips and a Large size — for $80 less at launch. The prescription range is narrower.

Best for
Anyone who wants Gen 2 performance without paying for the Ray-Ban name

Pros

  • 8 hours rated plus 40 hours in the folding case; Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 (9to5Google, Android Central)
  • Customizable action button, adjustable temple tips and over-extension hinges the Ray-Ban Gen 2 lacks
  • Thinnest Meta frame yet, in Linen, Merlot, Classic Black and Classic Tortoise; sun, polarized, Transitions or clear lenses
  • Listed on Amazon

Cons

  • Prescription range is only -6.00 to +2.25 (Android Central) — Ray-Ban Gen 2 and Oakley HSTN go wider
  • No interchangeable nose pads; Android Central found the weight noticeable after about half an hour

Pick 03 · Camera AI glasses

Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2)

Ray-Ban Meta

The default smart glasses: a 12 MP camera with 3K/30 or 1080p/60 video, up to 8 hours per charge with 48 more in the case, 27 frame-and-lens combinations, and a Large size for wider heads.

Best for
Most people buying their first (or second) pair of AI glasses

Pros

  • 3K video at 30 fps plus a 1080p/60 mode, with the stabilization introduced on Oakley Meta HSTN (Android Central)
  • Meta rates up to 8 hours per charge — nearly double Gen 1 — and the case adds about 48 hours; 50% in 20 minutes
  • Standard and Large frame sizes; clear, polarized and Transitions lenses; prescription available through Meta or Ray-Ban
  • Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, 32 GB (about 500 photos or 100 30-second clips)

Cons

  • About 52 g — reviewers call the frames thick and heavy for all-day wear
  • Prescription range is narrower than a regular Ray-Ban and is quoted differently by sources (see the prescription guide)
  • Camera sensor is unchanged from Gen 1; low-light video is still weak in named reviews

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Meta Fury worth buying?

If you want Meta's current camera glasses for the lowest price and you like a thick rectangular frame, yes: $299 at launch for the same 12 MP / 3K camera as the $379 Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, eight hours rated with a 40-hour case, an action button and real fit hardware. Gizmodo scored it 3.5/5, with the reservations about Meta rather than the glasses.

What is the difference between Meta Fury and Meta Adventurer?

The frame, not the electronics. Both launched at $299 with the same 12 MP / 3K camera, eight-hour rating and 40-hour case. The Fury is bigger and boxier in one size; the Adventurer is the thinnest Meta frame and comes in Standard and Large.

Does the Meta Fury have the same camera as Ray-Ban Meta?

Yes — the same 12 MP sensor with 3K/30 and 1080p/60 video that the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, Gen 3 and Oakley Meta HSTN all use. The differences between those pairs are frame, battery rating, microphones and lens options, not image quality.

Does the Meta Fury take prescription lenses?

Yes, within a narrow range: Android Central publishes -6.00 to +2.25 for the Meta-brand line. If your prescription falls outside that, the Ray-Ban Meta route or Meta's prescription-first Blayzer and Scriber Optics frames are the options.

How long does the Meta Fury battery last?

Meta rates it at eight hours with a 40-hour folding charging case, the same as the Adventurer. Recording video drains it far faster than that rating implies, which is covered in our battery comparison.

Is the Meta Fury too big?

It is deliberately large. Gizmodo calls it bigger and boxier than Ray-Bans with thick arms and advises anyone who dislikes a bulkier look to steer clear — while finding it just as comfortable to wear as previous pairs. There is one size, so try the shape before committing.
